Do What He Says

This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to meditate on it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do. Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous?…”

Joshua 1:8-9 CSB

Remember when your parents said, just do what I say? Did you ever tell yourself, I’ll never say to my kids, because I said so? Did you keep that vow? I said it as well, and I broke that vow as well. I think God says the same thing to us!

When Joshua took the mantle from Moses to lead Israel into Canaan, God reminded Him the importance of His Word, His law. He told Joshua that if Israel would observe His truth and do it, they would prosper as they took possession of the Promised Land.

First, they had to walk into the Jordan River at flood stage. They had to trust God would do whatever it took for them to obey and step into these raging waters. It would mean they had to be strong and courageous. As soon as they did what God said, the waters parted so they could cross.

Next, they had to conquer Jericho by walking around the city once a day for six days with the priests carrying trumpets in front of the Ark of the Covenant. On the seventh day, they were to circle the city seven times amidst trumpets blowing and shouts. God had promised they’d win this city, and the walls fell as they obeyed God’s instructions. God was faithful to His promise.

What has God told you to do that seems impossible? Or maybe strange? Do what He says and watch what happens.

God doesn’t always explain why He commands what He does. But we can always trust that He has our best interest at heart and knows what will bring Him honor. We just need to do what He says.
