Laughter

Why did Sarah laugh?

Genesis 18:13 NLT

Laughter is often good for the soul.

Our newest little addition to our family surprised us when she gave a big belly laugh from a tiny little baby! Laughter like that is contagious and brings a smile to everyone!

But there are different kinds of laughter.

Then the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, ‘Can an old woman like me have a baby? Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return about this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” Sarah was afraid, so she denied it, saying, “I didn’t laugh.” But the Lord said, “No, you did laugh” (Genesis 18:13-15 NLT).

Sarah laughed but it was laughter of doubt, as if to say… “Ha, that is not happening!”

Has God ever told you something that seemed laughable?

Sarah was way too old to have a baby; no wonder she laughed. But wait… there is more to Sarah’s story.

Later we learn…

It was by faith that even Sarah was able to have a child, though she was barren and was too old. She believed that God would keep his promise (Hebrews 11:11 NLT).

Even though Sarah denied her laughter when confronted by God, her faith was so strong that later she believed God’s promise and was able to conceive. She was honored for it, becoming a hero of the faith.

God’s will may seem unbelievable at times, even laughable, and you may question God.

But like Sarah, consider what you do know about God and who He is.

God is able to do as He promises.

God sees all, knows all, is able to do all. Nothing is impossible for Him!

Father in the quiet of my heart You speak to me… whispering promises that You love me and have good plans for my future. These things may seem impossible considering my circumstances right now. I am sorry for my doubt, please forgive me and help me have a strong faith like Sarah, trusting You are able, and nothing is impossible for you! In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
