Grateful for Mercy

Grateful for Mercy

Where is your faith?

Luke 8:25 NLT

On a calm day as I sailed across the Sea of Galilee on a boat tour in Israel, I could not help but think of this story…

One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and started out. As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger. The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and the raging waves. Suddenly the storm stopped and all was calm. Then he asked them, Where is your faith?” (Luke 8:22-25 NLT).

As I considered the disciples panic, I was surprised because I noticed the Sea of Galilee is not very large. I would say it even looks like a big lake, rather than a sea.

So, why did the disciples panic so much? Didn’t they know Jesus was with them?

Could it be their perception of the situation deceived them and all common sense left in that moment?

As I questioned them, I considered… how often do I do that?

One day, I am walking through life peacefully with Jesus. Suddenly, I am told bad news. I panic inside, and I run off the path I was on with Jesus.

And I try to fix everything myself… alone without Jesus.

When I finally think it is too much and I’m overwhelmed… then, only then… do I look around for Jesus.

In my head, I picture Jesus patiently looking at me and waiting for me to look for Him before, He asks me, “Where is your faith, child?”

I have done this scenario too many times. I still have much to learn.

One of these days, with Jesus’ help, I am going to learn to stay steady in the storm.

Until then, I am so grateful Jesus is faithful and His mercy for me is new every morning! (Lamentations 3:23).

Father, in the quiet of my heart, You speak to me… whispering, “Do not fear, for I am with You.” Lord, help me not fear. Help me keep my eyes steady on You, trusting You in the storm and in the calm. Thank You for Your faithfulness and mercy that is new every morning! In Jesus name I pray, amen.
