The Rest of the Story
“… I came that they may have life and it abundantly.”
John 10:10 ESV
Over fifty years ago as I hopped downstairs to the kitchen, I heard a distinctive yet familiar voice on the radio that Mom listened to every morning. Paul Harvey shared The Rest of the Story, a weekday program. He mastered storytelling and was known for his memorable comment at the end of each broadcast. He left his listeners hanging and then declared dramatically, “And now you know…the rest of the story…” a surprise ending that revealed a famous person.
Jesus-followers know how the story ends—but many stop at forgiveness and assurance of heaven or work hard to please God. Is there more? Yes, that’s “the rest of the story!”
I was a Christ-follower for almost twenty-five years before understanding there is more to life. Discouragement and weariness characterized my life–-not the full and exceeding (abundant) life Jesus promised in John 10:10. I tried to do good in my strength instead of in the Spirit, who I received when my spirit was made new. The Apostle Paul told the Romans, No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us (Romans 8:37). In all the things that we’re up against (v. 8:35).
Romans chapter 7 introduces the inner struggle and warfare between our old Adam nature and our new Christ nature. We strive without the power of the indwelling Spirit. Romans 8 has the solution. The “rest of the story” is the Holy Spirit empowering us.
While we train for heaven, let’s engage our new spirit with His transforming power—i.e., dynamite (dunamis)—so abundant it overflows through us to others! Precious one, connect with the Holy Spirit continuously in prayer, not merely with your mind. Cry out for His help!
Romans chapter 8 further encourages us:
No more condemnation (v. 1).
Free in Christ Jesus (v. 2).
Righteous in Christ (v. 4).
Sons of God (v.14). Not fearful (v. 15).
Live fully alive—here and now!
