The Sounds of Silence…revealed by His Spirit
“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him”—but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.
1 Corinthians 2:9-10
Ladies, put yourselves in the shoes of Jesus’ closest followers in the forty days between resurrection Sunday and His ascension. Think how absolutely amazed on one hand and bewildered on the other you would have felt. He was alive! He was the Messiah as the prophets of old said! There would indeed be a kingdom of God on earth! But He would be leaving—it would be up to you to testify to the world about this kingdom. Oh yes, and I have promised you a gift from the Father; only you must wait for that gift (Acts 1:1-10).
Actually Jesus had told them much about the Holy Spirit, but it still was an Aha! moment when He appeared on the feast of Pentecost, ten days after Jesus was taken into heaven: Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and …all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:2-4).
We have the same Spirit in us, the Spirit who reveals all things that we search for in earnest in God’s word and as we pray. He, in turn, has searched the deep things of God. Really, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God, whom we have received (1 Corinthians 2:11).
So let us increase our times of silence as we approach Pentecost this year and tune into the Holy Spirit. After all, He is “the Spirit of truth” (John 14:7), the One we need to hear from in this crazy world we live in. And prepare to be amazed!
· “He will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I (Jesus) have said to you.” John 14:26
· “He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears (from the Father)…and make it known to you.” John 16:13-15
· He intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he (the Father) who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will. Romans 8:26-27
