Transforming Lives: a labor of love
My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you.
Galatians 4:19
Ladies, until Christ is formed in you is such a formidable thought to me. That Paul, a man, should wrap it in childbirth is quite intriguing. And yet Jesus Himself introduced the image of spiritual rebirth into Scripture: “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again” (John 3:3). Certainly, on his initial visit to Galatia Paul labored to rebirth his friends into God’s family. He is now, again, in the pains of making sure these children of his grow up in the faith.
The lesson for us becomes clear: we are to be actively involved in transforming lives with the truth of Jesus, whether in rebirth or growth in the faith.
But first thing first. I must be being transformed day-by-day, to reveal Christ in me (1:16). Spending time feeding on God is top priority:
“You have to be the nourishment for other people’s souls until they learn to feed on God. …But be careful to replenish your supply, or you will quickly be utterly exhausted. Until others learn to draw on the life of the Lord Jesus directly, they will have to draw on His life through you.” —Oswald Chambers My Utmost for His Highest Updated, February 9
A second key to transformation, Paul tells us, is the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will (Romans 12:2). And so I study God’s word with friends who challenge me to grow. We all need to know what is truth and how to stand firm in it, so we will not get caught up in the whims of the world.
A third really personal way to reveal Jesus to others is to have your story at your fingertips: Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15).
Certainly childbirth can be painful; and raising biological or spiritual children on the truth, difficult. Consider though, as Paul did: Christ formed, in rebirth or growing pains, a labor of parental love. My dear children!
