Yoked
"Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
Mark 10:9
In rural Africa, farmers often guide yoked steers to market, their strength combined to pull heavy loads over long distances. These animals must be well-matched in size and strength, moving in unity under the farmer’s direction. If one steer pulls too fast or the other lags behind, the journey becomes difficult, and the load wobbles. But when they work together, guided by their master, they accomplish their purpose with far greater ease.
When on a mission trip to Zambia with my husband, I realized this illustrates God’s design for marriage. When a husband and wife are yoked together under God’s leadership, they are able to navigate life’s challenges in harmony. Just as the yoke keeps the steers aligned, marriage is meant to be a covenant that keeps two people walking in step with one another—sharing burdens, encouraging each other, and growing in faith together. However, when one spouse pulls in a different direction, resisting God’s plan, the journey becomes strained.
Jesus reminds us in Mark 10:9 that marriage is not merely a human contract but a sacred union created by God. Just as the farmer carefully chooses and guides his yoked steers, God desires to lead husbands and wives, helping them move forward in unity and purpose. When both partners submit to His direction, their marriage becomes a testimony of His faithfulness and strength.
Reflection: Are you walking in unity with your spouse or preparing for a marriage centered on God’s guidance? Seek His wisdom, trust His leadership, and allow Him to strengthen your relationship for the journey ahead.
