Speaking the Truth
I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit—
Romans 9:1 ESV
Are you free to be honest and open with others? If not, start with a few trustworthy and safe family members or friends. How do you know when a person is “safe?” A safe person respects us and listens to our feelings—someone we trust to hold our stories in confidence and not repeat them.
Why is it hard to tell others the truth? We might be mocked and minimized. Maybe we don’t want to hurt others’ feelings. Maybe they will reject us. Maybe they will be angry. Maybe relationships will change.
Being honest and accurate is a way to respect others and yourself. Being honest is a healthy sign of trust in God. When we are honest, we allow God to control the results.
We can only be responsible for our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Not for someone else’s.
We may not yet trust Jesus—much less others—with the deepest parts of our hearts, but that is where healing and freedom begin. He is the Truth.
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6 ESV).
And you will know the truth, and truth will set you free” (John 8:32 ESV).
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed (John 8:36 ESV).
Heavenly Father, give us the courage to be honest instead of withholding the truth. You want us to be free!
