Weed and Sin Control

Weed and Sin Control

The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and
the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of
the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.
Matthew 13:37-39 NIV

As I was helping my husband mow the grass one humid spring morning, I noticed how the weeds were suddenly sprouting up and overtaking our grass. As I was moving right along with my mowing, I also noticed how many different types of weeds there were in my yard. Some, I would even say, were lovely to look at with their colorful blooms. Regardless as to how pleasing they looked, if not taken care of, they could easily choke the grass and take over my yard. The battle for weed control must begin.

I could not help but think how similar this is with our daily walk with God. We need to spend time with Him daily, nurturing our relationship with Him. Because, if we are not careful, slowly sin will creep in and entangle us when we least expect it. Just like those weeds with beautiful flowers, sin can also look pleasing to the eyes. Discerning what is good and pleasing to the Lord requires having a daily relationship with Him. Allowing His word and truth to guide us helps us to see what is reality and what is deception. Once you recognize it, then just like treating the yard for weeds, we must acknowledge our sin by confessing it.

In this passage, God clearly compares the devil and his followers to the weeds that were sown. When our eyes are taken off Jesus that is when the enemy makes his move. In the same way, we combat the weeds in our yard by being intentional in applying the necessary treatment. We must be intentional with our time in God’s Word.

Lord, help us to “weed out” anything hindering our relationship with You.
