Overcome with Awe
Suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace on earth to people he favors!
Luke 2:13-14 CSB
My daughter and I used to be angels. Years ago, we participated in our church’s annual Christmas concerts. We were angels with other women and girls, garbed in white gowns and barefooted. We stood atop boxes on stage behind the choir, in life-size speakers, and along the balcony during the song “Gloria” by Michael W. Smith. As I sang and gazed at the other “angels,” I felt nearer to God. We performed multiple times for several years and each time, even during rehearsals, I was overcome with awe at the sight and sound. Chill bumps. Tears. We sang at the top of our lungs in exultation of our matchless God. In those moments I was in the heavenlies!
I’m currently typing through tears of joy as I recall those moments.
I can only imagine how much more enraptured the lonely shepherds were by the angel and heavenly host who proclaimed God’s glory to them! Speechless. In awe. God didn’t have to personally grace them that night with His holy and infinite presence, but He did.
Will you take a few moments today to quiet your heart—God’s home—to behold His incomprehensible majesty? Allow Him to soften your spirit. Reflect. Bow down before Him in humility and delight. Praise Him without restraint. Know Him more intimately.
“Gloria in excelsis Deo” is Latin for “Glory to God in the highest” and is a Christian hymn known as the Hymn of the Angels. Glory in the New Testament refers to the kingly majesty, excellence, preeminence, and dignity of God. We give God glory by recognizing and recounting His character through worship.
God’s glory is a big deal! He alone is awesome.
Lord Jesus, You are worthy to receive all praise, awe, and honor.
