Intentional Words

Intentional Words

I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever.

Psalm 145:1

I set my alarm early, knowing I had devotionals due soon and absolutely nothing written. I needed some quiet hours to reflect and write. For almost two hours, I sat and stared at my computer and my open Bible. Nothing came.

So, I leashed my chocolate lab and headed out the door. After a few minutes, an idea hit. I grabbed my phone, turned to my voice notes, and began recording as I walked. Suddenly, I noticed a cat lying in the middle of the street. The cat stood up and headed straight toward Duke. What cat does that? Duke is a big dog! I firmly gave commands to my dog and to the cat, though the cat totally ignored me.

Later, when I read the transcript, I laughed: “those who walk ahead of God walk out of his light into darkness. Duke leave it   leave it   get   no   leave it   Krazy Kat.”

The transcript was funny but also sobering. I began to think about my recorded words and wondered: What if I viewed a transcript of my words daily? How many would be reactionary and empty, and how many would be intentional and of eternal worth? Almost every morning I pray, May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer (Psalm 19:14). But I admit, there are many days I don’t intentionally use my words to praise God to others or to encourage and strengthen others.

I want to have the determination David had: Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts. They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty… They will tell of the power of your awesome works, and I will proclaim your great deeds (Psalm 145:3-6).

Lord, daily speak words of eternal worth through me. Amen.
