A Way to Pray
We are asking that….
Col. 1: 9 CSV
I recently discovered a dried clump of playdough in the back of my pantry. As I held it in my hands, the weight reminded me of how my heart feels sometimes for a brother or sister in Christ. I falter in knowing how to pray for them. That’s when I look to Paul who recorded one of his prayers for believers in his New Testament letter to the Colossians. His prayer guides me in my own.
We are asking that…
you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding
so that
you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him
bearing fruit in every good work
and
growing in the knowledge of God.
May you be strengthened with power…. according to His glorious might
for all endurance and patience
with joy
giving thanks to the Father
who has enabled you to share in the saints’ inheritance in the light.
Paul then gives the reason he was able to ask God for such things.
He has rescued us from the domain of darkness
and transferred us
into the kingdom of the Son He loves. (indentations mine)
When I bring that “heavy playdough heart” before the Lord, I can trust His Spirit to guide me in forming my thoughts into words of prayer and praise because I have been rescued from the domain of darkness and transferred into the kingdom of the Son He loves. Rescued and transferred. The powerlessness I’m feeling isn’t powerlessness at all. The true reality is much bigger than this moment in time. We can ask for knowledge of God’s will with spiritual understanding and wisdom so we and those we pray for can walk in a way that produces spiritual fruit. We can request that they have knowledge of God so they are strengthened with endurance and patience as they give thanks to the Father.
Thank You, Father, for guiding us through Your Word in knowing how to intercede for our brothers and sisters in Christ. Thank You for making a way for us to intercede because we have been transferred into the kingdom of the Son You love!
