God Has Us Covered
For you bless the righteous, O Lord; you cover him with favor as with a shield.
Psalm 5:12 (ESV)
Eleven blankets. One perfect covering.
Numerous throws at home for snuggling beneath. They’re trendy and sometimes I want to be comforted and hide from the cruel world.
“Cover” signifies to conceal, so that no trace can be seen; or to protect and defend.
And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them (Genesis 3:21 ESV).
By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark(covered inside and out with pitch) for the saving of his household… (Hebrews 11:7 ESV).
Covering was symbolized by the scarlet cord that Rahab tied to the window behind which her family was protected (see Joshua 2:18).
The blood of unblemished lambs brushed on the door posts and lintels of every Israelite home in Egypt guarded them as the Lord passed over while striking the Egyptian sons (see Exodus 12:21-27).
Later, For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed (1 Cor. 5:7 ESV).
Then the cloud [a covering] covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle (Exodus 40:34 ESV).
He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; (Psalm 91:4).
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil (Ephesians 6:11).
God’s provision for spiritual and physical protection for God’s people depends upon proper positioning. A promise of safety was given, but no one was safe unless he was in place. Are you in place?
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels (Isaiah 61:10 ESV).
Jesus, Better than a soft blanket, your perfect shed blood covers and secures us.
