Pass It On

Pass It On

“We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, His power, and the wonders He has done. Then they would put their trust in God.”

Psalm 78:4, 7

Two generations. One message.

I remember observing my mom sitting in her rocking chair by the living room window. That was her daily spot for reading her Bible and devotional books. We didn’t talk about it, but I sensed a kindred connection with her.

Mom passed from this life into her eternal home with Jesus early in 2019 after succumbing to Alzheimer’s disease that had progressively invaded her being over six long years. I brought her Bible home to Texas with me. Months later I was able to open it and read some of her favorite passages that she had lightly marked in pencil. I search for Mom’s purposeful markings from cover to cover. I cherish how she continues to speak into my life.  Many verses she starred and underlined were already amongst my favorites—ones on worry, anxiety, and trust. God continues to use her Bible to remind me of his praiseworthy deeds and to feel her presence. I am thankful.

I regret not openly sharing these together in person.

I’ve written in my Bible for years to help me remember lessons, but it never occurred to me that someday my own children might glean truths from the pages.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7 is a familiar passage for parents:

“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

My children read aloud from the Bible in our minivan each morning on the way to school. Now, I’m intentional about writing in the margins of my Bible. My Bible App is handy, but I choose to use my hardcover Bible.

Are you ready to start jotting Bible notes or writing your faith story for the next generation?

Lord, use me to share your Word.
