Superior Weaponry

Superior Weaponry

Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

Psalm 20:7

My husband’s new hobby is gun collecting. He is fascinated by old guns as well as the new ones. He watches shows to learn more. One show highlights the history of weaponry. It is interesting to see how weapons evolved over time. What was a cutting edge sword or gun one day is soon eclipsed by a more advanced weapon. Generally, those with superior weapons have an advantage in warfare.

David was familiar with war. He is sometimes known as the warrior king. David was so successful in military campaigns that he became a high ranking official in the army of King Saul. David and his men killed 200 Philistines so he could marry Saul’s daughter. As king of Israel, David continued to be victorious in battle.

But before all of those successes, David met a warrior who was every bit his superior. David was a boy; Goliath was a man. David was probably average height; Goliath was over nine feet tall. David had no armor; Goliath had a bronze helmet, armor, and greaves. David had a slingshot with stones; Goliath had a bronze javelin, spear, and sword.

By all indications, Goliath had the advantage. But David had a secret weapon. David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword, spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty (1 Samuel 17:45).  Like David, we will find victory in the name of our Lord, the ultimate weapon.

Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God (Psalm 20:7).

The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe (Proverbs 18:10).

Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:13).

Lord, your name is the name above every name. You are our victory in any battle.
