A New Identity
The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give.
Isaiah 62:2 ESV
The Yorkie terrier mix was two-and-a-half years old when we rescued him from the pet adoption center. His previous owners had surrendered him a week earlier due to neglect. The reason given was that they did not have time for him. The Center caretaker confirmed this by observing the long, matted fur coat and his insecure behaviors. He carried the dog like a twelve-pound infant child and referred to the pup as “Shiloh.”
Shiloh did not fit him well. His caramel-colored fur with lighter highlights resembled Biscuit, our granddaughter’s well-loved stuffed toy dog. We asked her if we could rename our new dog Biscuit. She thought that was a perfect idea. The new name symbolized a fresh start and a new chapter in our lives, and his joyful beginning filled us with hope and optimism.
Biscuit responded almost immediately to his name, which suited him well. As we bonded, his trust in us grew. Biscuit Sims had a new name and family.
We, too, have a new identity and forever home as part of God’s family.
Who do you belong to? It matters! Just as we chose Biscuit and welcomed him into our family, God chooses and welcomes us into His family. His new name for us is “Christian,” a follower of Christ. We trust Jesus and accept His righteousness as our own in place of our unrighteousness. He makes us new; we belong; and are valued, accepted, and loved.
This act of adoption and renaming symbolizes a fresh start and a new chapter in our lives, just as it did with Biscuit. God's infinite love for us grounds and secures us.
As you reflect on this story, consider your journey of faith. How has God welcomed you into His family? How has your new identity in Christ changed your life?
