Dig Down Deep
Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures.
Proverbs 2:2, 4 NLT
I sat behind a man whose hat displayed the phrase “dig down deep.” I thought, What would it look like for me to dig down deep into God’s Word?
Proverbs 2 enlightens us on how and where to start digging.
For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding (v 6). Why would we look anywhere else?
We can ask God for wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding (v3). James 1:5 assures us that God will give us wisdom generously if we ask.
Lord, all wisdom belongs to you. We ask for wisdom and understanding as we dig down deep into your Word.
Proverbs 2:2 instructs us to tune our ears to wisdom. The Hebrew word qasab is translated so your ear is attentive (AMP) and listening closely (CSB). I picture a person in a room trying to quiet all other noises so she can hear the most important sound.
We are encouraged to concentrate on understanding. The Amplified Bible states this as apply your heart to understanding [seeking it conscientiously and striving for it eagerly]. That is how intensely we are to dig for God’s treasures.
In fact, we are to dig as if we are searching for silver or hidden treasure (v 4). Am I currently searching the Scriptures that diligently or have I become complacent or too busy?
If I knew treasures were hidden in my backyard, I’m sure I would be out there daily with a shovel. Even a backhoe!
God’s Word is more valuable than silver, gold, and gemstones (Proverb 3:14-15), so let us dig down deep!
Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord, and you will gain knowledge of God. Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will find the right way to go (Proverbs 2:5,9 NLT).
