Write a Book
For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age…
Titus 2:11-12 NIV
How many of us would love to write a book? It would have a clever title and then right below it would appear our very own name. We could then identify ourselves as authors. How prestigious does that sound?
Our pastor recently gave us an assignment to write a book. He wanted us to write it in our own handwriting in a journal. Actually, he did not ask us to write an original book, he encouraged us to transcribe the book of Titus into the journal. Just like an original book though, the journals would be provided to others to read.
I wondered about the book of Titus. Why not the short book of Philippians or some chapters from one of the gospels? As I tackled the assignment though I realized the book of Titus contains many words of wisdom.
Upon first glance, I assumed God included this short book in the Bible because of the nature of the relationship between Paul and Titus. In the first chapter he greets Titus warmly. After perusing it further, I recognized the relevance of its message for godly living today.
Paul discusses how to live a life of integrity, sound in the faith so others will come to Salvation. He discusses grace and hope and love through Jesus. Such a small book, but full of wisdom.
Write a book! I may never write my own book, but I do count it a privilege to have had the opportunity to write down the book of Titus word for word by hand. The words truly came alive as I wrote.
Father, every one of your thoughts included in your Word have meaning and relevance for us as believers. Help us never minimize them or forget their importance.
