Christmas Carols

Christmas Carols

“But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,” declares the Lord.

From them will come songs of thanksgiving and rejoicing.

So you will be my people and I will be your God.

Jeremiah 30:17,19, & 22 NIV

Nothing gives me joy like Christmas carols—the ones about the birth of Jesus, anyway. The other ones are cute, funny, and fun to sing, but they do not touch my spirit. The ones that move me declare Jesus’ deity while coming to earth through the virgin birth. I love to sit in my living room in front of the lit Christmas tree and contemplate the true meaning of those songs, Jesus’ birth, and Christmas.

God used his Son, Jesus, to restore us to him and to give us spiritual health. Jesus’ birth signified God reaching down and giving us a chance at salvation from our sins. We are not able to do that on our own. Bridging that gap between sinful us and faultless God can only be carried out through his power, love, and glory. We do not have the ability or authority to do it on our own.

But God did have a plan and a way to carry out that plan. He wants a relationship with us unblemished by sin. He truly wants to be our God and for us to be his people.

As believers in him, we are motivated to sing Christmas carols with thanksgiving and rejoicing. As we sing and listen to these songs, may we reflect on our relationship with him, our God, and be ever more grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.

Father God, thank you for the gift of salvation through the death of your Son on the cross. Thank you for sending him to earth as a human baby. May we revel in his birth and its meaning every Christmas season.
