Writing the Word
I have treasured your word in my heart so that I may not sin against you.
Psalm 119:11 CSB
Have you ever wondered what it was like to only have God’s Word shared orally? No written scripture to study and memorize? What if no one had ever taken God’s words and written them down so that we have a physical Bible?
A few years ago, the co-leader of our life group challenged us to write a verse a day. She would provide a writing plan she found on line and provide verses focused on a different topic each month. She would send these to those who wanted to join in.
At the time, I thought, I’m not sure I can add anything to my time with the Lord. But I decided to join in since I was a leader in our group and wanted to show my support. I cannot tell you how many times the scripture of the day, or even the topic of the month, has spoken to a personal issue I was walking through.
Isn’t that how God’s Word is? Always timely, always true, always showing us who He is? Whether I’m in a topical Bible study, chronological reading, or just following a scripture writing plan, the Bible is relevant to life. As I’m writing, I’m thinking about what it says, what it teaches me about God, and how I am to respond to the truth I just wrote.
It isn’t about the amount of time we devote to doing these things, it’s about the consistency of developing our relationship with Jesus. These are just some tools to help us do that.
If you have never written scripture, try it! Pick a book of the Bible and just write a verse or two daily. Or find a writing plan to follow. Anything that gets you in His word is never wasted time!
Lord, your Word is all truth and all relevant. As I open the Bible open my heart to ways I can know You more and obey Your commands.
