Strengthening Exercises
My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word.
Psalm 119:28 NIV
I don’t know about you, but sometimes it is hard for me to keep believing. I pray and believe, but then I look at what I can see around me. My faith falters. My fears escalate. Doubt creeps in.
A few days ago fear really took hold. In my mind, I went to the worst case scenario. Can you relate? The differing versions of Psalm 119:28 capture my feelings. My soul is weary with sorrow (NIV). I am weary from grief (CSB). I am drowning in tears (GW).
Then I heard a verse. Just one verse turned my thoughts from the circumstances and back to God and His promises. Instead of your shame you will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace you will rejoice in your inheritance. And so you will inherit a double portion in your land, and everlasting joy will be yours (Isaiah 61:7 NIV).
Yes! Thank You, Jesus! I believe!
My spirit was immediately strengthened. I wanted more. I thought of other verses. Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy (Psalm 126:5 NIV). For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor, a lifetime. Weeping may stay overnight, but there is joy in the morning (Psalm 30:5 CSB).
I was not only strengthened but joyful just thinking of the joy that would come after the present troubles.
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment (2 Timothy 1:7 CSB). That fear I had let reign was not from God. Just by hearing and believing God’s word, the fear had to leave. It was replaced by power, love and sound judgment.
What about you? Are you fearful, depressed, anxious, or sorrowful? Get into God’s word. For me, one verse changed my perspective. God will supply what you need. He wants to strengthen you.
Father, strengthen us according to Your word. Replace our fears with Your great love, power and sound judgment.
