Watchman
Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.
Psalm 141:3
Words are powerful. Words can ignite or extinguish a relationship. Words can generate war or inspire peace. Words bring tears of emotion. But words can also make us laugh until our sides ache. A teacher’s words can establish everlasting motivation in the life and soul of a student. Mighty prayers uttered in every language on earth can bring revival. The lyrics of beautiful songs bring healing and joy. The precious gift of salvation resonates through the sweet and simple words of Jesus Christ’s birth, death and resurrection. (John 3:16, John 14:6, Romans 10:9)
At the beginning of each year I prayerfully choose one scripture verse to memorize as a motivational focus. Psalm 141:3 was perfect for me last year. Certain stressful situations caused me to blurt out careless zingers which were often hurtful or misunderstood by others.
I began praying the sixteen-word verse daily. I desperately wanted my remarks to encourage, help and bring a spirit of joy and comfort instead of stirring up negativity, confusion and division.
My confidence to communicate thoughtfully with others was rejuvenated as my prayers began to be answered. Peace returned when I asked for the Lord’s help. He knew my desire to encourage others had been temporarily disrupted by the enemy!
A.W. Tozer said, “So, it becomes the devil’s business to keep the Christian’s spirit imprisoned. Satan works to keep us bound and gagged and imprisoned in our own grave clothes. He knows that if we continue in this kind of bondage. . .we are not much better off than when we were spiritually dead.”
Savior, I ask you to be my Watchman in order to demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against your will. Help me to strive to take captive every thought. Teach me to reveal your love through my speech. (Ezekiel 3:17 and 2 Corinthians 10:5)
