The God Who Sees
“You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”
Genesis 16:13b
If you could choose a superpower, what would it be? Many of my students pick invisibility, saying it is “the ultimate” to exist without others knowing. While I smile at their answers, I remember feeling invisible on more than one occasion, and it isn’t an enjoyable feeling.
Once, in Bible study, as I was waiting for the class to begin, I walked to the front to write my word of the year onto the group poster. The facilitator didn’t look at or acknowledge me. I realize that she most likely didn’t hear or see me approach, but at the moment, I experienced invisibility.
Chances are you have encountered something similar. If so, Hagar’s story might be an encouragement.
Hagar, pregnant with Abram’s son, ran away from Sarai and was alone in the desert. Finding her near a spring, an angel called her by name and spoke a blessing over her child saying, the Lord has heard of your misery (vs. 11).
In her despair, God took the time to seek her out and bless her. He gave her the strength to obey His command to go back and submit to Sarai. Psalm 33:13 states, From heaven, the Lord looks down and sees all mankind. That means you too, in good times and bad. When life pulls the rug out from under you, He sees you.
Not only does He see you, He is with you. He will help you put one foot in front of the other whether you long for hope or need help moving forward in obedience.
No matter the need, He sees, and He is there.
You, Lord, the God of creation, see me. Thank you, that You care enough to acknowledge my pain and encourage me along the way with blessings. You are a good, good God.
