Travel, Travel, Travel
So, Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David…He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son.
Luke 2:4-7
Travel, travel, travel, how many times have I complained about having to travel during the holidays? We’d pile the kids, luggage, and presents into the car and off we’d go. My bad attitude about doing it every single year probably affected everyone involved negatively.
I think that’s why I was so struck this year when I read about Joseph and Mary’s journey. They did not have the luxury of riding in a heated or cooled vehicle. As a matter of fact, their mode of transportation was a donkey or walking. No radio, no movies or video games, just the road and others going their way.
Joseph had no choice in the matter. He had to go to Bethlehem to register because of the decree. He had every right to a bad attitude, but Luke mentions none.
Mary went on the long hard journey expecting to give birth any time. And, she did, in God’s perfect timing -- after they reached their destination. No evidence of complaints recorded from her either.
Whatever faces us this holiday season, for most of us a long excursion on foot or by donkey is not one of them. For that, we can truly give thanks while rejoicing in the birth of our Lord and Savior.
In light of Joseph and Mary’s example, I resolve to go where God wants me to go and do what he wants me to do -- even if it requires travel, travel, travel.
Lord, I love that your directives lead to your purposes being fulfilled. Help me to listen to your voice and obey with an attitude of praise and worship.
