Afraid of Heights
I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.
Psalm 34:4
Many times my students just make me giggle. At the same time, I find myself learning spiritual truths from some of these humorous situations.
We were out on the playground and I watched as a couple of my students played on these discs which hang from poles similar to a swing set. The discs are only about two and a half feet off the ground. The students can sit or stand on them to move them back and forth. These particular students sat.
They had played for a long while when one of the students yelled, “H-E-E-E-L-P MEEEEE!” I looked over and checked out his position. I saw nothing out of the ordinary for which he would need help so I asked him what was wrong.
“I’m afraid of heights!” he replied.
“Heights? All you have to do is put your foot down and you will be on the ground.”
“Oh!” He touched the ground with his foot, got down, and went on his merry way to play somewhere else fearlessly and contently.
How many times have I perceived my situation as dangerous, out of my control, too high up to get down? My perception may cause me to miss God’s view of the situation.
When I seek Him, because He sees the whole picture and He loves me, He shows me what to do. It could be as simple as letting go or putting my feet back on solid ground, His ground, where confidence in Him can replace my fear. I too can go on my merry way fearlessly and contently.
God, your Word says that when I seek You, You will answer me and deliver me from my fears. Help me to remember this truth in all situations. Teach me not to be so fearful. Amen.
