Pumpkin Time

Pumpkin Time

He made the moon to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when to go down.

 Psalm 104:19 NIV

Groggy and moving slowly, I open the back door to let our dogs out. It’s a bright, spring morning—green grass, warm sun accompanied by a light breeze, flowers sprouting (I feel compelled to mention the weeds I’ve looked at every morning this week and failed to pull). This is a favorite time for so many people! Even from Solomon, we hear praise that winter is past (Song of Solomon 2:11).

My husband is a rancher and Spring is his busiest (and most profitable) time of year. Even more reasons to love this time of year, right? Unfortunately, I’m not the biggest fan where Spring is concerned. I’m tempted to dwell on the negative—bugs, the onset of Texas heat and tornado season, a hectic schedule, longer days, and less downtime with my husband. Nope! Give me my pumpkins, pecan pie, bonfire nights, and prepping our hearts and homes for Thanksgiving and Christmas. C’mon, can’t we just have all that on repeat?

I was on a springtime morning walk when Psalm 104 slapped me upside the head and led me to repent for my selfishness. He made the moon to mark the seasons for a reason!

From the sun and moon to mitochondria and morning dew, God had a specific plan with timing and method when He created earth. Similarly, He continues to have a specific plan for us in every season. Fall harvest would not exist without the preparation and hard work that occurs in Spring. Those pumpkins I love so much? Take a wild guess when pumpkin seeds are planted.

On a deeper level, the abundance in my life and all that I have to be thankful for would be nothing without the trials and times I had to put in the mental and spiritual work, as well as time for being in God’s Word. Does scripture not instruct us to be faithful and thankful at ALL times? Additionally, Spring is when we prep our hearts to celebrate the resurrection of our Savior! I encourage you to think about a season or time that you typically dread or avoid. What blessing or plan could God have for you there?

Lord, Your Word is so good and such a light for me when I struggle to find joy in a season.  Please forgive me for being ungrateful or ignoring the beauty of something You are doing, even when times are hard. Thank you for Your grace and for ALL seasons! Guide me as I strive to be closer to and glorify Your name. Amen.
