Why me, LORD?
My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.
Psalm 121:2 (NIV)
Songwriter, Kris Kristofferson, wrote a song after he attended a church service with a friend.
The lyrics he wrote tell the story of his life-changing experience.
This particular song is unique from the many other songs he wrote because it is a conversational prayer.
One usually asks, “Why me, LORD?” expressing grief or anger toward God. Kristofferson asks the question as a desperate plea for help to understand why he is worthy to become a follower of Jesus Christ.
I believe the song is valuable enough for me to share with you as a devotional.
Why me Lord, what have I ever done
To deserve even one
Of the pleasures I've known
Tell me Lord, what did I ever do
That was worth loving You
Or the kindness You've shown
Lord help me Jesus, I've wasted it
So help me Jesus, I know what I am
Now that I know that I've needed you
So help me Jesus, my soul's in your hand
Tell me LORD, if you think there's a way
I can try to repay
All I've taken from You
Maybe Lord, I can show someone else
What I've been through myself
On my way back to You
Lord, help me Jesus, I've wasted it
So help me Jesus, I know what I am
Now that I know that I've needed you
So help me Jesus, my soul's in your hand
Lord, help me Jesus, I’ve wasted it
So help me Jesus, I know what I am
Now that I know that I’ve needed you
So help me Jesus, my soul’s in your hand
Jesus, my soul’s in Your hand
