A Habit of Faithfulness
Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
Proverbs 3:3-4 NIV
Years ago, my son told me his friend’s high school band would be going to a fabulous destination that year. My son was jealous. He wanted to go, too. I explained that the trip was a well-deserved reward for his friend. His friend had faithfully played for years in the band. He had consistently shown up to many band practices. He had practiced his instrument for countless hours.
I don’t think my words changed his outlook, but I have not forgotten them. Maybe I am the one that needed that reminder to persevere in faithfulness.
Daniel led a life of persistent devotion and service to God. Three times each day Daniel got down on his knees and prayed. That is no easy task for a man around eighty years old! He prayed and thanked God, just as he always had done (Daniel 6:10 ICB). Daniel had developed a habit of faithfulness.
Zechariah and Elizabeth are examples of consistently serving God. Both of them were upright in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commandments and regulations blamelessly (Luke 1:6 NIV). Zechariah and Elizabeth faithfully served God into their old age.
Daniel, Zechariah and Elizabeth were not honoring God to get something, but God generously rewarded them all. Daniel was protected from hungry lions. Zechariah and Elizabeth were blessed with a baby boy.
These examples challenge me to pursue a more consistent relationship with God. If you would like to also, join me in the following prayer.
Lord, we desire your presence in our lives. Help us develop a habit of faithful prayer and devotion like Daniel. Grant us opportunities to serve you like Zechariah and Elizabeth. Strengthen us to follow after you all our lives, regardless of any earthly rewards. You, Lord, are the best reward. Nothing comes close to knowing you.
