Calm My Fear
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving present your requests to God.
Philipians 4:6
As I write this devotion, I am praying the words of our scripture fervently. Our family is facing a situation about which I have many questions, but I am trusting God to calm my fears.
Anxiety is an uncomfortable feeling that can lead to negative consequences. Reasoning becomes cloudy when overwhelmed with worry. We have trouble making wise decisions when we are fearful and anxious. Fear of failure may also lead to procrastination or a lack of productivity. Worry can devastate personal and spiritual growth. It can hinder our relationships with others. So, conquering fear is important. What are some things we can do to help calm our fears?
First, we need to identify the fear. Ask yourself about the circumstances surrounding your feelings and what triggered them. What are you saying to yourself that is making you fearful? Then go the to the Lord and cry out to Him. Remember, God loves you and desires an intimate relationship with you. He’s in sovereign control of your situation, so bring your fear to Him.
Second, we should rebuke the fear before God. We have the authority and power in Jesus’ name to reject what isn’t from Him. Meditate on passages that will remind you of God’s love and care. “but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm” (Proverbs 1:33). “So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (Matthew 10:31). Use the truths of God’s Word to replace wrong thinking.
Finally, cling to your heavenly Father. Take your focus off your circumstances, and look to the One who promises His help. Isaiah 41:10 says, “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
Circumstances are external and often beyond your control. But your response originates within. It’s amazing how fears diminish in the Father’s presence.
