I’ll be Praying!

… many will give thanks…for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.

2 Corinthians 1:11

As my mother’s health declined, so did her speech. She responded to every question with one simple phrase, “Doing just fine!” Remembering her reply still brings a smile to my face, but it also reminds me of one of my own frequent responses.

I realized that a different three-word phrase has begun to dominate my own speech, “I’ll be praying!” As a result, I’ve begun to consider options for thoughtfully and authentically responding to prayer requests that arrive through technology.

Rather than replying “I’ll be praying,” I pause to pray. I reply with, “I just prayed about your request.” Other times I compose a prayer in my reply. Occasionally, I commit to pray each time the Holy Spirit brings the need to my thoughts.

My prayer journal contains lists of a different type of prayer—persistent, on-going prayers. Paul wrote of the impact of that type of intercessory prayer in his letter to the Corinthian church. Paul acknowledged that the favor he and his companions received during their travels came from the Corinthian church’s prayers. He wrote, … many will give thanks…for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many (2 Cor. 1:11).

I wonder if those who prayed for Paul were tempted, like me, to occasionally discount the significance of my prayers. Even though I might wonder if they make a difference, God does not. Whether I’m praying for a friend’s health or interceding over years for a family member’s salvation, my prayers matter.

To have been the recipient of others’ prayers also confirms the power of prayer. During those times, God’s presence and peace comforted, guided, and sustained me. God clearly heard and responded to those who prayed.

Father, thank You for the privilege of coming into your presence with the needs of others. Thank You for always hearing and responding. Keep me aware of the privilege to partner with You in Your great work in the world. Convict my heart when I am tempted to doubt the significance of my prayers. In Your Son’s name, Jesus, I pray, amen.
