Our Dependable God

…his compassions never fail.

Lamentations 3:22 NIV

My youthful father transformed rugged acreage into a small working ranch. The five springs on the property helped him envision the land’s potential.

Surprisingly, the spring at the old wooden corral stopped flowing this summer. I watched as the cattle and horses sniffed the area before wandering off in search of water elsewhere. Severe drought made this spring undependable.

The sight of that thirsty livestock reminded me, my soul seeks dependability just like cattle seek water—a predictable source of physical and emotional care. What a relief to know that when earthly sources fail or disappoint, I have a dependable God whose wellspring of compassions never run dry. They are a renewable fountain of grace every day.

The author of Lamentations grieved the Jewish nation’s suffering under the Babylonians who had surrounded them with bitterness and hardship (3:5). In those darkest of times, he was able to declare a foundational truth, Because of the LORD’S great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness (Lam. 3:22, 23 NIV).

Remind me, Lord, when I forget, that Your great love is both compassionate and dependable. Guide me in walking in the grace of that truth as I wander through life’s seasons of drought and seasons of plenty. Keep my heart and ears attuned to this grace. Amen
