Watch Out for the Potholes

I instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble.

Proverbs 4:11-12 NIV

One particularly cool spring morning, I had decided that I was going to walk around the
neighborhood and catch up on reading my emails in the process. I thought I was being wise with my multi-tasking skills until I found myself down on the ground.

Because of my lack of focus, I did not notice the pothole in the road, which caused me to stumble. Picking myself up and checking my scraped knee, I limped my way back home. As I hobbled along, I realized how foolish it was of me to think I could reach my goal while my attention and focus was on something else.

The same concept can hold truth in our spiritual walk. If we are not spending time in God’s Word and having intimate conversations with our Heavenly Father, we are taking our eyes off the straight path. When the “potholes” of difficult decisions, or unexpected events interrupt our life, we might find ourselves down on the ground, because we have taken our eyes off Jesus.

He promises to “instruct us in the way of wisdom” (Proverbs 4:11-12). He knows bumps in the road will happen, but He promises to be there with us through it. “The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in Him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with His hand” (Psalm 37:24).

Thank Your Father for being with us through the “potholes" in our life. Give us wisdom to rely on Your Word and Your guidance as we navigate over them all.
