Pursuit of Dreams

Give thanks to the God of gods. His faithful love endures forever.

Psalm 136:2

If you are like me, you had dreams as a child. In my late teens, my dream was to be a wife and mom. Although I didn’t plan to marry before college graduation, I married at age 19. Step one in the dream came true! Step two in my dream didn’t.

Instead of pregnancy, we experienced infertility. How could I live the rest of my life without being a mom? It’s all I knew I was supposed to do on earth.

Then God interrupted my dream and changed my life when I took a step to trust the God of gods with His purpose rather than mine. He gave me a choice to continue to hold on to my dream of motherhood or ask Him to show me His plan, even if it didn’t include a baby.

If I held to my plan at all costs, my dream would become my “little ‘g’ god.” There is nothing wrong in having dreams as long as we filter them through His Word and listen to what He tells us. He dreams bigger things for us than we can ever imagine.

Gratefully, He did choose us to parent twins through adoption, but His plans included much more for our family than we would ever have considered if I had not said yes to His question:  “Will you pursue your plan, or lay it down and follow Mine?”

Do you need lay down your dream and ask the Lord what His dream for you is? The death of a dream is painful, but trusting Jesus’ faithfulness, to know and bring about His best for you and His Kingdom, brings more joy and peace than anything you could dream up.

Do you believe…the LORD your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, mighty, and awe-inspiring God… (Deuteronomy 10:17)? If so, ask Him to show you the next step in His plan.
