Growing in Prayer
For where two or three gather in my name, there I am with them.
Matthew 18:20 NIV
The first church spent their time learning the apostles’ teaching. And they continued to share, to break bread, and to pray together (Acts 2:42 ICB).
I love learning the lessons of Scripture, helping each other, fellowshipping, and praying together. But that last part could send panic through my body. The thought of praying in public made my heart beat fast, my face flush, and my mind go blank. Can anyone relate? You who avoid eye contact with the person looking for someone to lead a prayer?
For introverts, prayer meetings, class gatherings, and small prayer groups can send us into panic. So much so that we avoid those situations. I have been there. But God has grown me.
Before you say you will never get there, let me encourage you to step ever so slightly out of your comfort zone. You may be pleasantly surprised.
I started praying out loud with children. That was safe. I could use simple words and they wouldn’t judge.
Then I led a Bible study with teens girls who knew little about the Bible and prayer. God continued to grow me as we prayed together.
I coordinated a group of ladies for a ministry. I opened our meetings with prayer. I was more anxious because these were mature believers. But I could plan ahead how to pray.
God continues to move me out of my comfort zone. In the process, he has helped me focus more on talking with him than on the people around me. God is the only one I need to please.
I am now part of a small group of ladies that prays for our nation each week. I was faithful to walk through that door, albeit hesitantly, and he has blessed.
Ladies, this growth has all been God’s doing, not mine! Will you take a step into unfamiliar territory? God may do things in your life you never dreamed possible.
