Wonderful Counselor

For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6 CSB

Do you need help making a decision? Or understanding the Scriptures correctly? Or relating with someone in the best way? The Wonderful Counselor is ready to assist you!

As a counselor, Jesus listened and asked questions, then gave answers. At twelve, He was sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers (Luke 2:46-47 NIV). We don’t know exactly what impact Jesus’ questions and answers had on these teachers, but they were definitely left with something to ponder.

Jesus didn’t shy away from telling someone what he or she needed to hear. In His interactions with the woman caught in adultery in John 8, Jesus did not accuse the woman of her past sins. He did, however, advise her to Go and sin no more (John 8:11 NLT).

As a Wonderful Counselor, Jesus answered people’s questions but avoided pushing them beyond their readiness to receive. One day, Jesus participated in a question and answer session with some teachers of the law. One teacher wisely expounded on the answer Jesus gave. Jesus told him, You are not far from the kingdom of God (Mark 12:34 NIV).

Jesus refused to rush the process. He didn’t say, “You will get to the kingdom if you just do this or stop doing that.” He trusted that the Holy Spirit would bring the man to the next step at the proper time.

The Wonderful Counselor will answer our questions and advise us, too. He corrects us, guides us and gives us meaning in life.

Jesus, we come to you as our Wonderful Counselor. Our questions are plentiful and our wisdom is cloudy, but you have the words of life. Speak your truth to our hearts and guide us as we submit to your advice.
