The Love of God Pursues Us

The LORD appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, I have continued to extend faithful love to you.

Jeremiah 31:3 CSB

“One, two, three, seven, thirteen, twenty. ““Ready or not, here I come!”

Four-year-old Alton, my grandson, counted while my 10-year-old granddaughter, Libbey, found a hiding place. Alton searched everywhere that he knew to look but couldn’t find Libbey. He checked favorites spots, but eventually gave up. Libbey, of course, was thrilled that she had outsmarted Alton. She came out from hiding just before Alton broke into tears. They took turns hiding and seeking but eventually tired of the game.

God, on the other hand, perseveres with steadfast, everlasting love. It’s not a fleeting game for Him.

Consider the following statement:

The love of God pursues us even when we don’t pursue Him.

Do you believe that? It is true.

God has pursued people throughout history by acting in love toward each one. Unfortunately, we don’t always seek Him. Our love is tainted and fickle.

Why does God’s love persist relentlessly? Because God is love (1 John 4:8). Love gives (1 Corinthians 15:57). Love never ends (Lamentations 3:22). God is faithful when we are unfaithful (2 Timothy 2:13).

How does God demonstrate His love for us? He gave and sent His only Son to us, born as a baby (John 3:16). We celebrate this event as Christmas. Also, Jesus died for us while we were still flawed and alienated from Him (Romans 5:8). His wondrous works are on our behalf (Psalm 107:21) and for our good (Romans 8:28).

It is His delight, not duty, to love us (Zephaniah 3:17).

And yes, He desires our love and devotion in return.

Don’t miss the Hope of Christmas. Will you respond to the Christ Child who extends faithful love continually?

God, thank You for loving us even when we fail You. You never hide from us or forsake us. May we not miss the everlasting Hope and Love of Christmas.
