The Significance of Place
…He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands.
Acts 17:26
How would you describe God? When Paul reasoned with the elite philosophers in Athens, he used these words as he described the one true God. …He Himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else. From one man, He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands (Acts 17:25-26).
This passage reminds me of the lilting accent of a Welsh pastor as I listened to him weaving his way through Scripture. He carefully pointed out the implications of biblical events and the places they occurred: God’s choice of Jerusalem as the place He sent His Son; Jesus will one day touch down—not just somewhere—but on the Mount of Olives, a specific place; the disciples gathered for their last meal, in the Upper Room; they also waited in that same room for the coming of His Holy Spirit; Paul traveled on a particular road when Jesus appeared to him in blinding light. I took copious notes captivated by this new awareness of how God uses places in His creation, the earth, when relating to mankind.
God’s plan for humanity and for my own life are both part of God’s plan. That brings me comfort, knowing my “place” is part of God’s design for me.
Lord, thank you that I have a place to experience the gift of life here on this planet named Earth. I know that gift came from You. My feet feel solid and my heart is at rest in this tiny bit of your Creation where You’ve placed me.
