Remembering God
You will have these tassels to look at and so you will remember all the commands of the Lord, that you may obey them…Then you will remember to obey all my commands and be consecrated to your God. I am the Lord your God who brought you out of Egypt to be your God. I am the Lord your God.
Numbers 15:39a - 41
Although God forbids having or worshipping idols of any kind, he did instruct the Israelites to put tassels on the corners of their garments to remind them of the importance of his commands. The tassels also served as an admonition to obey those same commands.
I could not help but imagine what those garments might have looked like with a tassel on each corner. What imagery must have come to the Israelite’s minds as they gazed upon them.
I might identify beautiful skies as a “tassel” for me. I have taken countless pictures of them. Every time I look up, I think of God, the author of heaven and earth. I do not worship the skies, but they lead me to worship the one who made them. Drawing near to him in this way encourages me in my daily walk with him.
Seashells, another of my “tassels,” bring me back to the time when God kept me from drowning in the Pacific Ocean. They remind me to thank him for the life he has given me and for his presence in it.
What “tassels” come to mind for you? Surely, many nudge you to draw near to him as well. The memories invoked when you see them surely lead you to praise him.
Let’s worship him as our God every time we see remembrances of him. Let’s declare his bountiful love for us to everyone who will listen.
Dear God, you are our Lord. Your commands are beneficial to us. Thank you for the reminders of your goodness and mercies in our lives.
