How Service Paid Off

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Galatians 6:9

Olga felt weary.

Anyone would in her situation — especially six months into a pandemic. She desperately needed a job, but all her leads seemed to go nowhere. Then, her mom died. She couldn’t even go back to her home country for the funeral.

Just a few weeks later, Olga remembered her commitment to volunteer at a conference. This wasn’t just a couple of hours. This obligation meant spending 10-hour days all weekend to meet and greet people.

She was already emotionally drained. How could she muster the energy for the job at hand?

Nevertheless, she also recalled her pledge to serve others even during her own difficulties. So, she did it anyway. She showed up each day with a smile and enthusiasm.

After one of the long and exhausting days, a friend found her and couldn’t wait to introduce her to the man sitting at her table.

As the friend introduced them, he told Olga he wanted to hire her. When she heard his offer, she laughed. The whole idea seemed like a joke. They had never even met. He had never seen her resume.

Besides, many people had offered jobs that fell through. No could could blame her for not taking him seriously.

Nevertheless, she brought him her resume the next day and met him at the office the next week.

Much to her surprise, she started the job two weeks later. She’s been at the job almost a year now and can’t imagine working anywhere else.

What area of your life do you feel weary? What harvest would you like to reap? Are you asking God for it?
