The Purpose of Rain

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him

Romans 8:28

A few years ago, spring brought rain. And more rain. And more rain. It lasted days and days. Gray, heavy clouds hung overhead, and not one stitch of sun appeared for 10 days straight. This may not seem like a lot for many areas of the world, but this Texas girl was starting to feel waterlogged and melancholy after day three.

I prayed, “Lord, I trust your wisdom in sending all this rain, and I know you have a purpose for it, but can we see the sun soon? If it be Your will, in Jesus’ Name.” After many more days of that soggy weather, the clouds moved, and the rain finally came to an end.

Spring was beautiful that year, but the fall was exquisite! The changing leaves were more vibrant than they had been in years. Reds and golds, yellows and oranges lined the streets in a bold display of color. Everywhere you looked for weeks, which was much longer than usual for the leaves to remain on the trees, God’s artistry presented itself.

It was then that God reminded me about the overwhelming rains from early spring and showed me that this splendor was a result of them. He then related it to life.

When I lost a child, I experience three years of intense grief and depression. As more time passed, I slowly was able to climb out of the gray pit of despair. Now, years later, I can look back and be thankful for all that God did in me and for me throughout that time. I would not be the person I am today without having gone through it. He exchanged beauty for ashes. Vibrant color for gray.

The trials and valleys we experience can be like those rains that won’t let up. They last longer than you think you can bear. You feel weary and weighed down. But don’t despair.

Fall is coming! And it will be beautiful. He promises.
