Creator (Elohim)

In the beginning God (Elohim) created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1 NIV

“What’s in a name?” young Juliet asks in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Juliet argues that a name is an arbitrary label with little meaning. However, in the Bible names carry much significance. As God’s relationship with His people unfolds, He reveals His nature through various names.

In the first verse of the Bible, Genesis 1:1, we are introduced to God as ElohimElohim is God’s creative name. Elohim created the heavens and the earth. The first two chapters of Genesis expound on God’s creative power. Elohim created water, air, blue skies, fuzzy caterpillars, chirping birds and long-necked giraffes.

Everything we see Elohim created and so much more that we don’t see. The visible spectrum--the light and color we can see--is only a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. We know of radio waves, microwaves, and x-rays but we don’t see them. Our creator God tucked them away in His creation, knowing that one day we would use them.

From my perspective, the earth seems enormous. But our earth is tiny compared to other planets in our solar system. According to universetoday.com, 1321 earths would fit inside Jupiter. Our solar system is one of at least 500 solar systems in the Milky Way galaxy. Scientists estimate 100 billion to 200 billion galaxies exist in the universe.

Wow! When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them (Psalm 8:3-4)?

And yet, He does. The all-powerful, wise, and creative Elohim cares about our fears and concerns. Don’t be afraid, because I am with you. Don’t be intimidated; I am your [Elohim]. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will support you with my victorious right hand (Isaiah 41:10 GW).

Elohim, I praise you as my Creator. You are bigger than all my troubles, and you walk with me through them.
