At the moment of realization that I had left my wallet in a busy interstate highway gas station two hours earlier, my heart began racing while my brain began rehearsing the rapid steps of what to do next. Call the bank card company. Call the credit card company. Call the station where I left it. Tomorrow, go to the driver’s license office to reorder my license.

It wasn’t a good time. It was late at night after a long week of caring for a family member during serious diagnostic medical testing, and I was exhausted. Since I was the one in charge of everyone’s well-being, I couldn’t let down, and I realized I had to believe all of the times I had taught the trust lesson. I needed to live out what I believed—Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight (Proverbs 3:5-6).

The next morning, I received a phone call from a state trooper telling me that his sister found my wallet in a gas station on the way to the funeral of their relative; and since she knew he would be at the funeral, she decided it would be in safekeeping with him. He professionally described everything that was in my wallet and asked me how I wanted to get it back…..through the mail or in person?

I was astounded! I realized what perfect timing it was for me to receive this random act of kindness while a blanket of comfort soothed me. My Lord God had chosen someone to help me at this critical time in my life.

A few days later, an envelope marked registered mail arrived with my wallet in the same condition I had left it in the restroom of that gas station.

Have you ever been the person God used to help someone in a time of great need? I encourage you to be aware of opportunities in your ordinary days to be a valuable help to others. Surely that sister and brother who helped me had some Godly upbringing.

Thank you, Jesus! You hem me in—behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me (Psalm 39:5).
