HIGHER CHOICE

Submit as free people, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but as God’s slaves. Honor everyone. Love the brothers and sisters. Fear God. Honor the emperor.

I Peter 2:16-17 (CSB)

It astounds me that Apostle Peter wrote these words while in prison in Rome eighteen months before he was sentenced to be executed. The fifth ruler of the Roman Empire, Nero, was unsurpassed in his cruel behavior. Surely Peter knew his death was imminent when he wrote the New Testament letters.

Approximately 30 years earlier, Peter had been an eye witness to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. God’s power was lived out before his eyes which gave birth to super strength to fulfill his anointed life’s work while under great duress.

Other Christ followers realized that everything Jesus predicted and taught them was true! Their passion and joy of belief also united the new believers together—at all costs and with great joy—to became the first builders, missionaries and servants of Christian churches throughout Asia Minor.

They were forced to hide in caves in order to be safe while communicating through underground systems of messaging. Christ’s promise of eternal life was their hope and joy as they fulfilled the work. True freedom rested in their joyous faith while they fellowshipped with other believers.

Democracy is something to behold, isn’t it? The freedom to choose our leaders is astounding but sometimes this right is taken for granted. Many of us are exhausted from the stress and clamor of today’s political battles, but we must step back and be grateful.

As an American, I cherish my right to vote. I also cherish the ability to speak and write about my religious beliefs.

Let us be thankful, even if the outcome of the election is not your choice. We made the Higher Choice to be a disciple and follower of Jesus Christ. That’s why we respectfully honor our ruling authorities.
