Seeing Jesus

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me…

John 14:3

The hospice nurse called. Mother was close to the end. In spite of Covid, I was allowed into the nursing home to be with her. My brother joined me, and for three days we sat with Mother. Initially, she responded with her eyes to our words, but soon, her eyes were set. She could hear us, but it seemed she saw nothing—until her final moments.

On the last day in the early morning hours, I read to her about heaven. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away (Revelation 21:3-4). When I finished, I leaned close and said, “Mother, when you see Jesus, will you tell me?” I asked, even though for years Mother’s dementia had robbed her of the ability to talk.

That evening through zoom, my sister spent time with Mother. Mother had been waiting for that call. Her breathing changed and soon her countenance changed. Her once set eyes opened wide. She began moaning, and I knew she was trying to tell me something.

Then it hit me. I said, “Mother, do you see Jesus?” I am confident she saw Him! After expressing our love, I said, “It’s time for you to go with Jesus. He has come to take you home.” After a few breaths, Mother was gone. She went from my arms to the arms of Jesus.

Friend, do you want to see Jesus as you take your final breath on earth? Then see Him now for who He truly is—the only Son of God who gives eternal life to all who believe. See Him, believe in Him, and commit your life to Him, and He will one day come for you and take you to be with Him forever!
