Who am I?

Faith for When you Wonder

all the stages of my life were spread out before you, the days of my life all prepared before I’d even lived one day.

Psalm 139:16 MSG

At first his eyes were wide with fright as he hid behind our little hinny, a cross between a male horse and a female donkey. His odd head and tail confused me when he first showed up in our pasture. His owner retrieved him multiple times, but finally just gave up since this odd-looking animal had claimed our hinny and her pasture as his home.

We learned this strange looking equine was a Zeedonk, the cross between zebra father and a mother horse. I’ve always thought he didn’t know who he was. That’s because he didn’t want to stay with the horses in his own pasture. Instead, he insisted on being with our little hybrid. Now, he’s settled in and occasionally wanders over for graham crackers and a good behind-the-ears scratching. In Spring his shedding hair reveals the faint zebra stripes on his skin. However, the loneliness in his eyes still lingers. So, I often talk to him and tell him who he really is—a zebra/horse in love with a donkey/horse.

Have you ever felt that way? Do you ever wonder, “who am I?” or “why am I here?” Knowing we’d all have these questions, God guided King David to record his deep musings along with God’s truth in a hymn for the Temple choirmaster.

The entirety of David’s Psalm 139 is my “go to” Scripture when I struggle with those two troublesome questions of life. I need to feel grounded, and the God of the universe makes it very clear that we’re no whim of mankind. We’re the marvelous creation of the One Who loved us even before we were born. We’re no accident. We have a purpose. He knows each day of our lives.

Spend time with King David in Psalm 139 and dwell upon these truths the next time you feel like a Zeedonk in a strange pasture. God’s own Spirit will lift your thoughts and heart to His glorious heights of truth and love. You are, indeed, His own precious child!
