Surrender All to Him

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn, and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

James 4:7-10

Often we are amazed by a believer’s perseverance in adversity and their confidence in God’s promises. Such people demonstrate a spiritual fullness that many of us long to have. A closer look reveals that they have followed Jesus’ example and surrendered all to God.

For those of us who like to be in control, we may find it hard to submit to the Lord. This has been man’s problem since the beginning. Adam and Eve were the first to decide to ignore God’s warning and chart their own course. We know from God’s Word that this led to disaster. We too are often guilty of wanting to use our own knowledge, rather than the wisdom and understanding that we find as we submit to God’s direction and lean on the promises of His Word.

Another reason that we hold back and don’t surrender is fear: perhaps we won’t like what the Lord chooses for us—He might ask us to give up a favorite activity or take on additional responsibility. How we are perceived by others also factors into our decision about submission. Selfishness and pride can make us reluctant to let God take charge. We cling to our own plans and dreams.

However, the abundant life comes from giving up control and trusting God completely. Then we will experience His deep love, which satisfies more fully than any other. Our usefulness in His service will be maximized as we operate in the Spirit’s power. And our obedience will also bring glory to Him as well as blessings to us.

Resolve to be submissive to the Lord this year. He will pour out his blessings, and you too can be an example to others as you live confidently in His promises.
