Model Behavior

Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

1 Corinthians 11:1

“Excuse me. May I ask you guys a question? I noticed you praying before your meal.”

My husband was meeting with a friend over lunch at a local restaurant when the young man interrupted them. The man and his wife had recently moved and were looking for a church home. My husband and his friend had a nice conversation with the man, inviting him and his wife to church and welcoming them to town.

When my husband prayed, little did he know that someone was watching him. I remember as a young mother how my children would repeat things I said or copy my behavior. That sure made me think carefully about my words and actions.

“Preach the gospel, and if necessary, use words.” This quote is attributed to St. Francis of Assisi, although some question whether or not he actually said it. Either way, it is a worthwhile saying. We pick up much by observing people. Body language, facial expression, tone of voice, reactions all convey a wealth of information.

Peter encouraged wives concerning their husbands that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of [their] lives (1 Peter 3:1-2). Words aren’t necessary to further the process.

I don’t know about you ladies, but I sometimes have a hard time keeping the words from spilling out of my mouth. God can do so much more through me when I focus on revering Him, rather than nagging my husband.

We may never know how God uses our daily behaviors to draw people to Him. If we focus on loving God and others well, God will take care of the results. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another (John 13:35)

Jesus, empower us to follow you and your example as we walk today. We are yours to use for your glory.
