Who’s Agenda?
Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
Galations 5:25
Normally I would not get excited about flying. I must admit that anxiety usually kicks in at the very thought of getting on an airplane. This time was different though. I had an agenda.
Let me back up to say I had just studied a book about sharing Jesus with others. The author used many examples about visiting with the people he sat by on a plane. I could not wait to see who God would bring to my left and right so I could put into practice what I had learned.
Getting to the airport early, I had plenty of time to grab lunch and head to my gate. I barely sat down when a young man came rushing up asking me if I were as nervous about flying as he was. We entered in to a lengthy conversation about why we were travelling, our families, and jobs. After realizing I had sat down at the wrong gate, I moved on with the anticipation of who would be seated next to me on the plane.
While at the correct gate, a young lady beside me started talking. We chit-chatted a bit before our plane started boarding. Again my excitement mounted about who would occupy my row.
As soon as I sat down I realized a problem. The people, very sweet and good natured, were not from the USA and did not speak English. I tried not to show my disappointment as I asked God what happened.
He immediately reminded me he had provided two other people for me to talk to, but me, so focused on my agenda, had missed both opportunities. As I prayed for the young people I had visited with earlier, I had to admit I had not “kept in step with the Spirit.” I felt so silly, but asked for forgiveness anyway.
God, thank you for your Spirit which guides me. Help me to keep in step with your Spirit and thanks for forgiveness when I fail.
