Famished

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you.

James 4: 7-8a

After teaching all day, I would come home famished. I would snack and snack to try and find just the right food to ease my hunger and tiredness. Moving from one food to the next, nothing seemed to help.

One day the answer became quite evident. The reason I experienced such a feeling of hunger came from not eating the right kinds of food in the first place. I would eat whatever was convenient not necessarily healthy.

When I changed to a healthier diet of more protein less carbs and sugar, I really and truly did not feel as hungry or tired any more when I got home as I had in the past. I did not need to search the pantry for that magic snack to make me feel better.

What would happen to my spiritual life if I acted in the same way? What if I sacrificed time with God for unhealthy TV shows or other activities which got in the way? How long would it be before my relationship with God would suffer just as my physical health did?

Not spending the quality time with God in Bible study, prayer, and worship would be just as devastating to my spiritual well-being as the poor choices in my diet made in my physical well-being. My longing for Him would soon become just as evident as my hunger for food.

I must allow Him to nourish our relationship. I cannot do that if I allow needless activities to interfere. To feel healthy spiritually helps the rest of my life stay in synch. It makes me spiritually full not famished.

Thank you, Lord for standing by me guiding me, leading me, relating to me. Help me to submit to you more every day.
