Walk with God
Enoch walked with God…
Genesis 5:24
I can do the math! The Bible says that Enoch lived 65 years, then became a father and walked with God 300 years. Altogether Enoch lived 365 years (Genesis 5:21-23). Like Enoch, raising wee ones certainly drove me to my knees and necessitated a daily walk with Him. The Bible has so little to say about Enoch, but we can see from his place in history that he lacked many faith-building benefits that we enjoy. He did not have the Bible to learn how to live a life that pleased God. He did not have the Holy Spirit living within Him to testify to God’s presence in and around him. I wonder if and who were godly influences in his life. Yet his feverish pursuit of God was recognized and memorialized for all time in the Holy Writ!
I am convinced that walking with God involves the concept of follow-ship. Jesus asks us to follow him. We think of following as rather passive…like a little girl skipping behind her daddy as he walks along a sidewalk. But walking with God has nothing to do with passivity. Following Christ is an intentional striving, with focused purpose and active pursuit of Him. This is how we know God more. This is how we grow in intimacy with Him…by straining toward the prize of Christ as Paul writes in Philippians 3:13-14.
For me, the biggest obstacle to this feverish pursuit is distraction. Yet, I know, I’ve experienced, and I want to linger in the satisfaction that fills my soul and fulfills my life by diligently pursuing Him. David writes about this pursuit in Psalm 27:4, One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.
May we be women who fervently desire God and persistently, passionately pursue Him above all else.
